How to install fiber optic splicing tray

Fiber optic splice trays are installed by preparing fibers, splicing them, securing them in the tray, and managing excess fiber while maintaining proper bend radius and organization.

Step-by-

Step Installation1.

Prepare the Fiber Cables

Strip the outer jacket and coating of the fiber cable using a fiber stripper to expose the bare fiber cores. Clean the fiber ends with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and contaminants. Cleave the fibers using a precision fiber cleaver to create smooth, perpendicular end faces for low-loss splicing.

2.

Splice the Fibers

Perform either mechanical splicing or fusion splicing according to the manufacturer's instructions. For mechanical splicing, align the fibers in the mechanical splice connector; for fusion splicing, use a fusion splicer to weld the fibers together. 3.

Install Splice Holders in the TrayPlace the completed splices into the designated splice holders or slots within the tray. Ensure that each splice is properly seated and protected with a splice sleeve or cover. 4.

Route and Secure Fibers

Loop excess fiber behind the tray (typically 1. 5 loops) to manage slack and maintain bend radius. Use cable ties, Velcro dots, or crimping tabs to secure loose tubes or buffered fibers to the tray base.

For ribbon fibers, follow specific routing instructions to avoid tight bends or twists. 5.

Stack and Close Trays

If multiple trays are required, stack them according to the enclosure's capacity, fastening trays together as needed for stability. Place the tray lid over the splices and press down to lock it securely. 6.

Labeling and Organization

Clearly label fibers and splices for easy identification and maintenance. Use color-coded ties or markers to distinguish between incoming and outgoing fibers. 7.

Verification and Testing

Test the spliced fibers using an OTDR or power meter to ensure signal integrity and low insertion loss. Verify that all fibers maintain proper bend radius and are free from stress or sharp bends. By following these steps, fiber optic splice trays can be installed efficiently, ensuring organized fiber management, protection of splices, and long-term network reliability.
