Correct installation of the cold-joint base box

Proper installation of a cold-joint base box involves secure base plate placement, precise alignment, lifting per manufacturer instructions, and ensuring airtight sealing with nitrogen purging.

Base Plate Installation and Positioning

Begin by installing the base plates provided by the manufacturer, ensuring they are level and aligned with the structural frame of the cold box. The base plates support the weight of the cold box and its internal equipment, so they must be placed on a stable, vibration-free foundation. Temporary bracing may be used to maintain alignment during installation.

Lifting and Handling

Use the lifting lugs designed for horizontal and vertical lifting to move the cold box into position. Follow the unit-specific lifting instructions to avoid structural stress. Ensure that the weight is concentrated on the structural frame members during lifting and placement.

Alignment and Securing

Once positioned, verify that the cold box is properly aligned with plant piping and other equipment. Remove any temporary shipping supports and ensure that all nozzles and connections are free of debris or water. Ground the cold box casing to prevent static or electrical hazards.

Nitrogen Purge and Sealing

Install the nitrogen purge system, starting with the breather valve and emergency vent. Perform a dehumidification purge to remove moisture and prevent ice formation inside the cold box. Continuous nitrogen purging should be maintained during non-operational periods to protect the internal equipment.

Insulation and Closeouts

Install perlite or slag wool insulation as specified, ensuring that flexible insulated closeouts are properly sealed around piping and penetrations. This maintains the cold box's airtight integrity and minimizes heat ingress.

Final Checks and Testing

Verify temperature element continuity if applicable. Perform a field piping leak test using dry gas at -40°F dew point or lower. Confirm that all overpressure protection devices and filters are installed and functional.

Install ladders, handrails, and platforms as required for safe access.

Safety Considerations

Always follow manufacturer instructions and safety warnings. Improper installation can lead to equipment damage, operational hazards, or voided warranties.
