Wireless router placed in fiber optic box

A wireless router should not be placed inside the fiber optic box; it connects to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) via an Ethernet cable.

Understanding the Setup

Fiber optic internet delivers data as light pulses through ultra-thin glass strands. The fiber line terminates at an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), often called a fiber box, which converts the light signals into electrical signals that your router can use.

The ON

T is typically installed on an interior wall, in a closet, or near where the fiber enters your home. Correct Router ConnectionONT to Router: Use a standard Ethernet cable to connect the ONT's LAN or Ethernet output port to the WAN/Internet port on your wireless router. Router Placement: Place the router in an open area for optimal Wi-Fi coverage, not inside the ONT box.

Both the ON

T and router require power and should be near electrical outlets. Configuration: Power on the ONT first, wait for the status lights to stabilize, then power on the router. Configure your router settings, including Wi-Fi name and password, to complete the setup.

Key Considerations

The ON

T is essential because routers cannot interpret light signals directly; it acts as a bridge between the fiber network and your home network. Placing the router inside the fiber box can block Wi-Fi signals and may cause overheating or connectivity issues. For larger homes, consider mesh Wi-Fi systems to extend coverage while keeping the router in a central, open location.

By following this setup, you ensure that your fiber optic internet delivers high-speed, low-latency, and reliable connectivity throughout your home.
