We replaced our fiber optic router at home

You can replace your home fiber optic router with a compatible router connected to your ISP-provided ONT, ensuring it supports Gigabit Ethernet and modern Wi-Fi standards.

Determine Compatibility

Fiber internet uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) instead of a traditional modem.

The ON

T converts fiber signals into Ethernet, which connects to your router. To replace your router, ensure your new device has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port and supports the speeds of your fiber plan. Routers designed for DSL or cable with phone or coaxial inputs will not work with fiber.

Some IS

Ps may require specific VLAN, PPPoE, or IPoE settings, especially if you use TV or VoIP services. Signs You Need a New RouterYour router is older than 3–5 years and may not support Wi-Fi 6 or 7, causing bottlenecks. Latency issues in high-demand applications like 4K streaming, VR, or smart home devices.

Inability to support multiple devices simultaneously (over 30 devices). Security updates are no longer supported, leaving your network vulnerable.

Steps to Replace Your Router

Prepare the Equipment: Gather your new router, Ethernet cables, power adapter, and ISP details. Disconnect the Old Router: Safely unplug the existing router from the ONT and power source. Connect the New Router: Use an Ethernet cable to connect the ONT to the router's WAN port.

Plug in the router and power it on. Configure Settings: Access the router's admin panel via its IP address. Set up SSID, passwords, security protocols (WPA3 recommended), and any VLAN or PPPoE settings required by your ISP.

Optimize Placement: Position the router in a central, elevated location to minimize dead zones. Avoid metal, concrete, or brick obstructions and extend antennas if applicable. Test the Connection: Run speed tests to ensure you are achieving expected fiber speeds and adjust settings if necessary.

Additional Tips

Consider a Wi-Fi 6 or 7 router for future-proofing and better performance with multiple devices. If your ISP router includes TV or VoIP, replacing it may require additional configuration or using bridge/cascade mode to maintain these services. Regularly reboot or update your router firmware to maintain optimal performance.

By following these steps and ensuring compatibility, you can successfully replace your home fiber optic router and maximize your internet speed, coverage, and security.
