Classified by optical cable laying method

Optical cables can be classified by laying method into indoor, aerial, direct-buried, pipeline, and underwater types, each suited to specific environments and installation requirements. 1.

Indoor Optical Cable Laying

Indoor optical cables are primarily used in horizontal and vertical backbone subsystems within buildings. Horizontal cables connect workstations to distribution points, while vertical backbone cables link equipment rooms to distribution rooms on each floor. These cables are typically installed in cable shafts, conduits, or ascending rooms, and must be firmly fixed using nylon ties or steel clips to prevent sagging or slipping.

Fireproofing and moisture resistance are also critical, often achieved with sealing materials and fireproof coatings. Extra cable length (usually 5–10 meters) is reserved for future connections or adjustments. 2.

Aerial Optical Cable Laying

Aerial cables are installed on utility poles and are commonly used for local networks or long-distance lines. There are two main types: Suspension wire type: The cable is hung on a suspension wire attached to poles, with the wire bearing the load. Self-supporting type: The cable itself has a self-supporting wire in a figure-eight configuration, carrying its own weight.

Aerial cables are cost-effective and quick to install but are more vulnerable to natural disasters such as storms, ice, or floods. 3.

Direct-

Buried Optical CableDirect-buried cables are installed underground without protective ducts. They must resist mechanical damage and soil corrosion. Typical burial depths range from 0.

8 to 1. 2 meters, depending on soil type and environmental conditions. Trenching standards vary: 1.

2 meters for ordinary soil, 1. 0 meter for semi-stone, and 0. 8 meters for quicksand.

The trench bottom is padded with fine or sandy soil, and the cable must be laid carefully to maintain allowable fiber strain. 4.

Pipeline Optical Cable Laying

Cables can also be installed in pre-existing pipelines or ducts, which provide mechanical protection and facilitate future maintenance or upgrades. This method is commonly used in urban areas where civil works are minimized. Some modern methods involve embedding cables in laying strips on road or wall surfaces, allowing stable installation and easy removal without extensive civil engineering works.

5.

Underwater and Submarine Optical Cable Laying

For long-distance trunk lines or submarine communications, optical cables are laid underwater. These cables are specially designed to withstand pressure, corrosion, and mechanical stress in aquatic environments. Installation requires specialized ships and equipment to ensure proper placement and protection along the seabed.

Summary

The choice of optical cable laying method depends on environmental conditions, cost, maintenance requirements, and network design. Indoor installations prioritize safety and fire prevention, aerial installations focus on cost and speed, direct-buried cables emphasize durability, pipeline methods facilitate maintenance, and underwater cables enable long-distance connectivity. Proper planning, supervision, and adherence to standards are essential for all methods to ensure reliable and long-lasting optical networks.
