Wiring in the distribution box with flexible wire

Proper wiring of a flexible wire distribution box involves connecting incoming circuits to the box, securing flexible conduit, grounding, and organizing wires for safe, code-compliant distribution.

Key Components and Preparation

A flexible wire distribution box typically consists of an outer enclosure and internal electrical components such as breakers, bus bars, and terminal points. The enclosure protects the wiring from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage, and should be chosen based on IP/NEMA ratings appropriate for the installation environment. Flexible conduit, such as Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduit (LFMC) or Metallic Flexible Conduit (FMC), is used to route wires into the box while allowing bends and adjustments.

Before wiring: Ensure the box is dry, accessible, and properly mounted. Verify the load capacity and select the correct wire gauge and breaker size. Gather tools: screwdrivers, wire strippers, pliers, conduit connectors, and a multimeter for testing.

Wiring Steps

Connect the Flexible Conduit: Insert the conduit into the knockouts of the distribution box and secure it with the appropriate connector.

LFM

C is ideal for damp or outdoor areas, while FMC is suitable for indoor industrial or commercial spaces. Route and Strip Wires: Pull the wires through the conduit, strip insulation to the correct length, and ensure no damage to the conductor. Grounding: Connect the ground wire to the box's grounding terminal or bus bar.

For metallic boxes, the conduit itself may also serve as a grounding path. Connect Circuits: Attach the hot (live) wires to the designated breakers and the neutral wires to the neutral bus bar. Ensure each circuit is properly labeled for identification.

Organize and Secure Wires: Use cable ties or wire management clips to keep wires neat and prevent strain on connections. Avoid overcrowding the box to maintain airflow and safety. Testing: Before powering on, perform visual inspections and use a multimeter to verify continuity, proper grounding, and correct connections.

Modular and Prewired Systems

For systems like Walkerflex or Connexion 2. 0, prewired junction boxes and connectorized cables allow faster installation. These systems use male/female connectors or snap-in cable sets, reducing the need for manual splicing and improving flexibility for future moves or expansions.

The electrical contractor wires the main circuits to the input whips, and the modular connectors handle distribution to floor boxes or outlets.

Safety and Compliance

Follow NE

C, IEC, or local electrical codes. Use UL/CE-certified components. Include protection devices such as breakers, fuses, or surge protectors for each circuit.

Label all circuits and maintain documentation for inspections and future maintenance. By following these steps, a flexible wire distribution box can be safely and efficiently wired, providing reliable power distribution with the flexibility to adapt to future changes.
