Grounding Standard Diagram for Distribution Boxes

Distribution boxes are grounded using a dedicated ground wire connected from the box to a mounting plate and then to a central grounding point, ensuring total system resistance below 0. 1 Ohm.

Grounding Components and Connections

Ground Wire from Distribution Box: A ground wire is attached to a threaded stud at the bottom of the distribution box housing.

In the U

S, a 10 AWG (5. 26 mm²) wire is used, while in other markets a 6 mm² wire is standard. Connection to Mounting Plate: The ground wire from the box is connected to a metal mounting plate.

This plate serves as an intermediate grounding point and ensures all attached equipment shares a common ground. Connection to Central Grounding Point: A second ground wire runs from the mounting plate to the factory or facility's central grounding point. This ensures that all distribution boxes and connected equipment are referenced to the same earth potential.

Ground Resistance Requirements: The total resistance between all system parts and the central ground must be less than 0. 1 Ohm. For longer tool cables or multiple spindles, additional ground wires may be used to maintain safe resistance levels.

Practical Examples

Single Spindle with Long Cable: For a 60 m tool cable, the tool cable resistance is 180 mOhm, and the ground wire resistance is 84 mOhm. The total parallel resistance is 57 mOhm, which is below the 100 mOhm safety threshold. Shorter Cable or Multiple Spindles: For a 30 m cable, the tool cable resistance is 90 mOhm.

If spindles are grounded together, the total resistance remains below 100 mOhm, eliminating the need for extra ground wires.

Key Design Considerations

Wire Sizing: Ensure the ground wire is sized according to local standards (10 AWG in the US, 6 mm² elsewhere) to safely carry fault currents. Solid Connections: All connections must be mechanically secure and corrosion-resistant to maintain low resistance over time. Step and Touch Potentials: Proper grounding limits step and touch potentials, protecting personnel from electric shock during ground faults.

Soil Resistivity and Exposure: Grounding design should consider soil resistivity and potential mechanical damage to ensure long-term reliability.

Summary

The standard grounding process for distribution boxes involves a dedicated ground wire from the box to a mounting plate, then to a central grounding point, with total system resistance maintained below 0. 1 Ohm. This configuration ensures personnel safety, equipment protection, and system stability in electrical distribution networks.
