Feeder fiber optic cable

Feeder fiber optic cables are high-capacity cables that transmit optical signals from central access nodes to distribution points in FTTx networks.

Overview

Feeder fiber optic cables serve as the backbone of modern fiber networks, connecting the access node to primary distribution points such as street cabinets, building entrance boxes, or fiber concentration points (FCP) over distances that can span several kilometers. They are designed to carry high-bandwidth signals efficiently and reliably, supporting both point-to-point and passive optical network (PON) architectures.

Cable Types and Design

Feeder cables come in various designs to suit different deployment environments: Loose Tube Cables: Contain stranded buffer tubes with loose optical fibers around a central strength member. They are ideal for outdoor installations and can be blown or pulled into ducts for protection. Ribbon Cables: Feature multiple fibers arranged in ribbons, allowing high fiber counts in a compact design, suitable for high-bandwidth applications.

Mini Cables: Smaller diameter cables designed for microduct systems, offering up to 50% smaller size while maintaining high fiber counts. Armored Cables: Reinforced with metallic or dielectric layers to protect against mechanical stress, rodent damage, and harsh environmental conditions.

Fiber Types and Counts

Feeder cables can use single-mode fiber (SMF) for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission or multi-mode fiber (MMF) for shorter-distance applications. Fiber counts vary widely depending on network requirements: High fiber-count cables: Up to 864 fibers for point-to-point deployments in dense FTTH areas. Lower fiber-count cables: Used in PON networks with passive splitters, typically ranging from 12 to 288 fibers.

Deployment Considerations

Outdoor Installations: Feeder cables are designed for aerial, duct, or buried deployment, often with UV-resistant, water-blocking, and flame-retardant jackets. Duct and Sub-duct Planning: Properly sized ducts or flexible sub-ducts are essential to accommodate cable growth and maintenance, maximizing fill ratio and future scalability. Modularity: Selecting cables with modular fiber counts allows networks to adapt to future expansion or changes in architecture.

Applications

Feeder fiber optic cables are widely used in: FTTH (Fiber to the Home) and FTTO (Fiber to the Office) networksHighway, railway, and airport networksData centers and energy infrastructureUrban and rural broadband deployments These cables ensure high-speed, reliable connectivity from central hubs to distribution points, forming the critical link in modern fiber-optic networks.

Feeder cables

Feeder cables are Fiber Optic Cables that run out from the Access Node up to the Fiber Distribution terminal. The number of fibers in the cable will depend on the build type.

Useful feeder cable in FTTH

The feeder cabling may cover a few kilometers distance before termination and will generally consist of larger fiber count cables (100s of fibers) to provide the necessary fiber capacity to serve the FTTH area.
