Long-distance trunk optical cable repeater section

A long-distance trunk optical cable repeater section is a segment of an optical fiber system where repeaters amplify and maintain signal integrity over extended distances, often spanning thousands of kilometers.

Function of Repeater Sections

In long-distance optical fiber systems, especially submarine cables, optical signals attenuate over distance due to fiber loss. Repeater sections are installed at intervals to amplify the optical signal, ensuring it reaches the next terminal or repeater without significant degradation. These repeaters are designed to be maintenance-free and highly reliable, often operating for decades under harsh conditions.

Optical Amplification Technology

Modern repeaters typically use erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which employ erbium-doped fibers and 980 nm pump laser diodes to boost signal strength. Redundant pump lasers are often included to enhance reliability, and gain flattening filters (GFFs) are used to maintain uniform amplification across the transmission bandwidth, which can reach up to 40 nm. This ensures consistent performance for multiple wavelength channels in wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems.

Gain Equalization

To maintain signal quality across cascaded repeaters, gain equalizers are deployed at intervals. There are two main types: Shape Equalizers (SEQ): Compensate for wavelength-dependent gain variations of repeaters and cables. Tilt Equalizers (TEQ): Correct gain tilt caused by differences in repeater output levels and fiber loss.

These equalizers help preserve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and overall system performance over long distances.

Mechanical and Environmental Considerations

Submarine repeater housings are pressure-resistant and corrosion-resistant, often made from beryllium-copper alloys. They are sealed to prevent water and gas ingress, maintaining internal humidity below 20% for decades. Shock and vibration are mitigated using rubber cushions and metallic springs, ensuring stable operation under deep-sea conditions.

Power Feeding

Repeaters require electrical power, which is supplied through the submarine cable's power feeding line. Systems may use fixed or switchable power feed paths, with voltages up to 11 kV for long systems spanning thousands of kilometers. Power redundancy and remote switching capabilities are included to handle faults and maintain continuous operation.

Repeater Placement and System Design

The interval between repeaters is carefully chosen to balance signal quality, system cost, and reliability. Shorter intervals improve SNR but increase the number of repeaters and cost, while longer intervals reduce cost but require higher amplifier performance. System design also considers fiber loss, optical output power, noise figure, and multiplexed wavelength performance to ensure the desired transmission quality over the entire trunk line.

Summary

A long-distance trunk optical cable repeater section is a critical component in optical communication systems, providing signal amplification, gain equalization, and environmental resilience. Proper design of repeater intervals, amplification technology, and power feeding ensures reliable transmission over thousands of kilometers, whether in terrestrial or submarine networks.
