How to determine the direction of a cable tray bend

Cable tray bends are oriented based on the required path of the cables, using horizontal bends for lateral changes, vertical bends for elevation changes, and tees for branching, while considering bend radius and cable fill.

Types of Cable Tray Bends

Horizontal Bends (Elbows): Used to change the direction of the tray along the same plane, typically to navigate around walls, columns, or other obstacles. Vertical Bends: Allow the tray to move up or down between different elevations, ensuring smooth transitions without stressing the cables. Tee Bends: Facilitate branching into multiple directions, providing flexibility in complex installations.

Determining Bend Direction

Plan the Cable Path: Identify obstacles, elevation changes, and the desired routing path. The bend direction should guide cables smoothly around these features without sharp turns. Select Bend Type: Choose horizontal, vertical, or tee bends based on whether the change is lateral, vertical, or branching.

Consider Bend Angle: Common angles include 15°, 22. 5°, 30°, 45°, and 60°. Smaller angles (15°–22.

5°) are ideal for thick or high-voltage cables with large bending radii, while 30° is standard for general use, and 45°–60° is used in confined spaces. Check Cable Radius and Fill: Ensure the bend radius accommodates the cable's minimum bend radius to prevent kinking, and verify that the tray fill does not exceed capacity, especially on the inside of bends where cables travel a shorter distance and may crowd.

Calculating Offsets and Bend Placement

Offset Calculation: For lateral or vertical offsets, measure the distance between the start and end points of the offset. Use multipliers based on the bend angle to determine cut marks and sloped section lengths.

Two-

Bend Rule: Each offset typically requires two bends—one to move laterally or vertically and one to return to the original path. The total tray section consumed equals twice the single bend length. Centerline Consideration: When calculating the bend, focus on the centerline of the tray for alignment, but account for inner-rail crowding to maintain proper cable spacing.

Installation Tips

Secure bends to the supporting structure to prevent sagging or misalignment. Use pre-fabricated fittings for standard angles to save time and ensure consistency, reserving field bending for non-standard dimensions. Regularly inspect bends for stability, especially in environments with vibration or thermal expansion.

By following these steps, you can determine the correct direction and type of cable tray bends, ensuring smooth cable routing, compliance with bend radius requirements, and optimal tray fill.
