Metal Cable Tray Size Chart

Metal cable trays come in standardized widths, depths, and lengths to accommodate various cable loads, with common widths ranging from 50mm to 600mm and depths from 25mm to 150mm.

Standard Dimensions

Width: The nominal inside width of metal cable trays typically ranges from 50mm to 600mm, depending on the application and cable volume. Smaller widths (50–150mm) are used for control or data cables, while larger widths (300–600mm) are suitable for power distribution or high-density installations. Depth (Side Rail Height): Tray depth, also called side rail height, usually ranges from 25mm to 150mm.

Depth affects vertical stacking capacity, cable fill compliance, and heat dissipation. Deeper trays allow more cables and better airflow, which is critical for high-current or heat-sensitive installations. Length: Standard tray sections are commonly 2 meters or 3 meters long, though custom lengths are available.

Sections are interconnected using couplers or fast-coupling systems for quick installation. Material Thickness: Metal trays are manufactured in various gauges to support different loads. Light-duty trays are thinner and suitable for small cables, medium-duty trays are thicker for moderate loads, and heavy-duty trays are designed for large power cables or industrial environments.

Tray Types and Finishes

Solid Bottom: Provides maximum protection for cables but limited ventilation. Perforated: Offers ventilation and heat dissipation while supporting medium loads. Wire Mesh (Cablofil): Lightweight, highly ventilated, and flexible for complex routing.

Finishes: Pre-galvanized steel is common for indoor use, while hot-dipped galvanizing (HDG) provides corrosion resistance for outdoor or harsh environments.

Sizing Considerations

When selecting a tray size, consider: Cable fill: Avoid overcrowding to prevent overheating and maintain NEC/NEMA compliance. Future expansion: Choose a tray width that allows additional cables without retrofitting. Load capacity: Ensure the tray thickness and type can support the total cable weight.

Installation environment: Indoor, outdoor, or corrosive environments may require specific finishes or materials. By understanding these standard dimensions and types, you can select a metal cable tray that is code-compliant, structurally sound, and adaptable for future needs.
