How to test the continuity of an lc fiber optic patch cord

Use a visual fault locator (VFL) to verify continuity by checking for visible light at the opposite end of the LC patch cord. Step 1: Visual InspectionBefore testing, inspect both LC connectors using a fiber optic microscope. Look for scratches, pits, cracks, or debris on the connector endfaces, and ensure the fiber core is centered and fully inserted into the ferrule.

Clean any contamination with a fiber optic cleaning cube or appropriate wipes, and re-inspect at 200X magnification to confirm the connectors are defect-free, as dirt or damage can interfere with continuity testing. Step 2: Using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL)Connect the VFL to one end of the LC patch cord. Observe the opposite end for visible red light.

Check along the cable for any loss of light, which indicates a break or fault in the fiber. If light is visible at the far end, the fiber is continuous and suitable for use. Step 3: Optional Power Meter and Light Source TestFor a more precise assessment, use a light source and power meter to measure insertion loss: Connect the light source to one end of the patch cord.

Connect the power meter to the other end. Record the launch power and the received power. Calculate the insertion loss by subtracting the received power from the launch power.

For L

C connectors, an insertion loss up to ~0. 75 dB is generally acceptable. Step 4: DocumentationRecord the results of your continuity and insertion loss tests for each patch cord.

This ensures traceability and helps identify any defective cables before installation.

Additional Tips

Never look directly into the fiber end when the light source is active, as laser light can damage your eyes. Always clean connectors before testing to avoid false failures. For multiple fibers or installed networks, consider using an optical loss test set (OLTS) for faster and more comprehensive testing.

By following these steps—visual inspection, VFL continuity check, and optional insertion loss measurement—you can reliably verify that an LC fiber optic patch cord is continuous and ready for network deployment.
