Principle of Fiber Optic Distributed Sensors

Distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) are optical fibers that act as continuous sensors along their entire length, capable of measuring temperature, strain, and acoustic signals in real time.

Overview

Distributed fiber optic sensors transform standard optical fibers into sensing elements without the need for additional transducers. Unlike traditional point sensors, DFOS provides continuous, spatially resolved measurements along the entire fiber, effectively creating a mapped profile of the monitored parameter (temperature, strain, or vibration) over long distances, often tens of kilometers. The fiber itself serves as the sensor, making the system cost-effective and suitable for harsh or inaccessible environments.

How They WorkDFOS systems operate by sending laser pulses into the fiber and analyzing the backscattered light. The scattering occurs naturally due to the interaction of light with the glass structure of the fiber. Key scattering mechanisms include: Rayleigh scattering: Elastic scattering used primarily for detecting strain and vibrations (Distributed Acoustic Sensing, DAS)Raman scattering: Inelastic scattering sensitive to temperature changes (Distributed Temperature Sensing, DTS)Brillouin scattering: Inelastic scattering sensitive to both temperature and strain (Distributed Strain Sensing, DSS) The interrogator device measures the time-of-flight and spectral characteristics of the backscattered light, allowing precise localization and quantification of changes along the fiber with high spatial resolution, often down to the meter or sub-meter level.

ApplicationsDFOS technology is widely used across industries due to its versatility and real-time monitoring capabilities: Infrastructure monitoring: Bridges, pipelines, tunnels, and railways for strain, vibration, and temperature changes Energy sector: Oil and gas pipelines, power lines, and wind turbines for structural integrity and leak detection Security and surveillance: Detecting intrusions or unusual vibrations along perimeters Urban monitoring: Environmental and structural monitoring in smart cities, leveraging existing fiber networks AdvantagesContinuous monitoring: Provides a complete spatial profile rather than discrete points High sensitivity and accuracy: Detects minor variations in temperature, strain, or acoustic signals Long-distance capability: Low optical loss allows measurements over tens of kilometers Cost-effective and low maintenance: Uses existing fiber infrastructure and durable glass fibers Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Ideal for industrial and harsh environments Distributed fiber optic sensors are revolutionizing monitoring and safety systems by providing real-time, high-resolution, and scalable sensing solutions across a wide range of applications.
