Optical cables and armored optical cables

Armored optical cables provide enhanced mechanical protection and environmental resistance, while standard (non-armored) optical cables are lighter, more flexible, and cost-effective for protected environments. Standard (Non-Armored) Optical CablesStructure and Features: Standard optical cables, also called unarmored cables, consist of the core optical fibers, a protective buffer coating, strength members such as aramid yarn, and an outer jacket made of PVC or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) material. They do not include a metallic or reinforced armor layer, making them lighter and more flexible.

Advantages: Lightweight and Flexible: Easier to pull through conduits and navigate tight bends.

Cost-

Effective: Lower material and manufacturing costs. Simple Installation: Faster deployment in indoor or protected environments. Compact Footprint: Ideal for dense cable management in data centers or enterprise LANs.

Limitations: Limited resistance to mechanical stress, crushing, rodent damage, and moisture. Best suited for indoor, low-risk environments such as building backbones, data centers, and FTTH drop cables.

Armored Optical Cables

Structure and Features: Armored cables include an additional protective layer, typically corrugated steel tape (STA) or steel wires (SWA), around the fiber core. They also contain strength members like aramid yarns or FRP rods and an outer jacket of PE, LSZH, or PVC. Some designs combine tape and wire for double-armored protection, used in harsh environments like mining or submarine applications.

Advantages: Crush Resistance: Can withstand heavy loads in ducts, tunnels, or direct burial. Rodent Protection: Prevents damage from rats, termites, and other pests. Environmental Durability: Resistant to moisture, impact, and harsh outdoor conditions.

Longevity: Typically provides 20–30 years of reliable service. Limitations: Heavier and less flexible than standard cables. Higher upfront cost due to additional materials and manufacturing complexity.

Installation may require more effort and specialized handling. Use Cases: Indoor Armored: Data centers, medical facilities, and high-density indoor networks requiring durability.

Industrial/

Outdoor Armored: Underground conduits, direct burial, poles, walls, and harsh outdoor environments.

Key Considerations for Selection

Environment: Use armored cables for exposed, high-risk, or outdoor routes; standard cables suffice for protected indoor conduits. Cost vs Protection: Armored cables increase material cost by 40–60% but reduce long-term maintenance risks; standard cables are more economical for low-risk deployments. Installation Flexibility: Standard cables are easier to handle in tight spaces, while armored cables require careful routing due to weight and rigidity.

Network Longevity: Armored cables are preferred for long-term reliability in challenging conditions, whereas standard cables are suitable for controlled environments. In summary, the choice between standard and armored optical cables depends on the installation environment, mechanical protection needs, and budget. Standard cables are ideal for indoor, low-risk applications, while armored cables are essential for outdoor, industrial, or high-risk deployments where durability and protection are critical.
