Aluminum wire for grounding of the three-level distribution box

Aluminum wire can be used for grounding a three-level distribution box if sized correctly according to NEC Table 250. 122 and installed to maintain low resistance and safety.

Grounding Conductor Sizing

The equipment grounding conductor (EGC) must be sized based on the rating of the overcurrent protective device (OCPD) protecting the circuit, not the normal load current.

NE

C Table 250. 122 provides the minimum sizes for copper and aluminum conductors. For aluminum, the size is typically larger than copper to compensate for its lower conductivity.

For example, a 60 A breaker may require a #8 AWG aluminum grounding conductor, while the same rating would use #10 AWG copper.

Installation Practices

Connection Points: Attach the aluminum ground wire from the distribution box's grounding stud to the mounting plate, and then from the mounting plate to the central grounding point or ground rod. Low Resistance: Ensure the total ground resistance is less than 0. 1 ohm for effective fault clearing.

Parallel Paths: If multiple spindles or long tool cables are involved, consider using larger aluminum conductors or parallel grounding paths to maintain low impedance. Raceway Requirements: NEC requires that the EGC be installed in the same raceway or cable as the circuit conductors to minimize impedance.

Material Considerations

Aluminum vs Copper: Aluminum is lighter and less expensive but has higher resistivity and is more prone to corrosion. Use anti-oxidant compounds at connections and ensure mechanical tightness to prevent increased resistance over time. Durability: For outdoor or industrial environments, consider coated or tinned aluminum to improve longevity.

Grounding System DesignThree-Level Distribution Box: In multi-level distribution systems, the neutral is typically grounded at the transformer and at strategic points in the system. Aluminum grounding conductors can safely connect the distribution box to the system ground if sized properly and installed with low-resistance connections. Ground Rods: If using ground rods, a 6–16 mm² aluminum conductor can connect the box to the rod, ensuring a continuous path for fault current.

Summary Recommendations

Determine the OCPD rating for the circuits in the distribution box. Select the aluminum conductor size according to NEC Table 250. 122.

Install the conductor in the same raceway or cable as the circuit conductors. Ensure all connections are tight, corrosion-protected, and low-resistance. Verify the total ground resistance is below 0.

1 ohm. For long runs or multiple spindles, consider larger or parallel aluminum conductors to maintain safety. By following these guidelines, aluminum wire can provide a safe and code-compliant grounding solution for a three-level distribution box.
