Tray-type optical cable

Tray-type optical cables (FOTC) are fiber-only cables designed for installation in cable trays, offering mechanical durability, fire compliance, and suitability for harsh industrial environments. OverviewTray-type optical cables, also known as Fiber Optic Tray Cables (FOTC), are specifically engineered for deployment in cable trays, which are open or partially open support systems used to route cables in industrial, commercial, and utility environments. Unlike hybrid tray cables that combine copper and fiber, FOTC are fiber-only, maintaining the same mechanical strength and durability as hybrid cables while eliminating power conductors.

Construction and DurabilityFOTC cables are built to withstand harsh conditions commonly encountered in tray installations: Impact resistance: Can endure falling debris or accidental contact during installation. Crush resistance: Designed to resist compression from other cables or tray rungs. Temperature tolerance: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments, including manufacturing plants, oil refineries, and substations.

Tight-buffered design: Facilitates easier terminations and improved bend radius performance. Standards and RatingsTray-type optical cables comply with NEC Article 770, which permits optical fiber cables in cable trays. Common NEC-listed types include OFNP, OFCP, OFNR, OFCR, OFNG, OFCG, OFN, and OFC, ensuring compliance with fire and safety standards.

Some cables also meet IEEE 383 fire resistance standards, particularly for nuclear power plant applications.

FOT

C may carry additional ratings such as UL Riser or Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) depending on the installation requirements. These ratings ensure safety in case of fire and minimize toxic smoke in enclosed spaces. ApplicationsTray-type optical cables are widely used in: Industrial facilities: Petrochemical plants, steel mills, cement factories, and mining operations.

Utility and substation networks: For high-speed data transmission and control systems. Indoor and outdoor environments: Cable trays in ceilings, walls, or outdoor conduits. They are suitable for mixed cable trays, allowing coexistence with power, control, and instrumentation cables, provided installation follows NEC guidelines.

SummaryTray-type optical cables provide a robust, fire-compliant, and mechanically durable solution for fiber optic installations in cable trays. Their design ensures reliable performance in demanding industrial and commercial environments while meeting NEC and UL standards for safety and fire resistance.
