Can I plug the network cable splitter into any of the different ports

You cannot plug a network cable splitter into just any port; it must be used with two specific ports on the router or switch and paired with a matching splitter at the other end.

How Ethernet Splitters Work

An Ethernet splitter is designed to divide a single Ethernet cable into two connections by reallocating the wire pairs inside the cable. Standard Ethernet cables have four twisted pairs, but 10/100 Mbps connections only use two pairs. The splitter assigns each pair to a different device, allowing two devices to share one cable.

However, it does not create additional bandwidth or function like a network switch, so each device shares the original connection speed, typically limited to 100 Mbps.

Proper Port Usage

Router or Switch Side: You must plug the splitter into two open ports on your router or switch. The splitter combines these two connections into a single cable by assigning each to different wire pairs. Device Side: A second splitter is required at the other end to separate the signals back into two Ethernet jacks for the devices.

Without this second splitter, the devices will not receive a proper connection. Not Any Port: You cannot simply plug a splitter into a single port and expect it to work for multiple devices. Each connection still requires its own router or switch port to function correctly.

Limitations

Speed: Splitters are generally limited to 100 Mbps per connection. Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) uses all four wire pairs, so a passive splitter will not support full gigabit speeds. Distance: Passive splitters work best over short cable runs.

For longer distances or higher speeds, an active splitter or network switch is recommended. Two Splitters Required: One to combine signals at the router/switch, and one to separate them at the device end.

Alternative

If you need multiple devices to connect at full speed, using a network switch is a better solution. A switch actively manages data packets and allows multiple devices to share a single router port without reducing speed. In summary, a network cable splitter must be used with two designated ports on the router or switch and paired with a matching splitter at the other end.

It cannot be plugged into just any port, and it is limited to lower-speed connections unless replaced with a switch for higher performance.
