4 Steps for Fiber Optic Cable Positioning

Fiber optic cables must be positioned carefully using methods like figure-eight coiling, duct placement, and proper clamping to prevent bending, twisting, or mechanical damage.

General Principles

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces, which can degrade performance or cause permanent damage. During installation, the cable should never be bent below its minimum bend radius, which is typically 20 times the cable diameter under tension and 10 times without tension. Maximum pulling tension must also be respected, often around 2,700 Newtons for standard loose tube cables, to avoid fiber breakage or performance loss.

Figure-

Eight Coiling

When unspooling or temporarily storing fiber optic cable, the figure-eight method is recommended to prevent twisting and kinking. The cable is looped in a figure-eight pattern, with each loop typically 4. 5 meters (15 ft) long and a diameter of 1.

5 to 2. 4 meters (5–8 ft). This method balances twists and reduces mechanical stress during handling.

Underground and Duct Installation

For underground installations, fiber optic cables are usually placed in conduits or sub-ducts to protect against physical damage, rodents, and environmental factors. Standard sub-ducts have diameters of 25–40 mm, while micro-ducts (5–14 mm) can be jetted into larger conduits. This allows efficient use of conduit space and simplifies future cable replacement or upgrades.

Cables should be pulled carefully into ducts, avoiding sharp bends and maintaining proper tension.

Aerial Installation

In aerial installations, cables are often lashed to a supporting strand. Two common methods are: Moving Reel Method: The reel moves along the route, and the cable is raised and lashed in one operation. Stationary Reel Method: Used when the reel cannot move along the route; the cable is pulled from a fixed position.

During aerial placement, frequent clamping is recommended to support the cable weight and prevent sagging, while avoiding sharp bends or twists that exceed the minimum bend radius.

Safety and Precautions

Protect cables from sharp edges, rocks, or vehicular traffic during installation. Use protective sheathing for outdoor installations exposed for more than 24 hours. Ensure proper slack at splice points and manholes to allow maintenance and prevent tension on fibers.

Avoid automated figure-eight machines for cables with central tube designs or corrugated steel armor, as they may exceed torsion and bend limits. By following these positioning methods and precautions, fiber optic cables can maintain optimal performance and longevity across aerial, underground, and duct installations.
