Installation of 40G Multimode Optical Module

A 40G multimode QSFP+ optical module can be installed by plugging it into the device port, connecting compatible OM3/OM4 MTP/MPO fiber, and ensuring proper alignment and hot-swap handling.

Module Overview

The 40G QSFP+ multimode optical module (e.g., 40GBASE-SR4) provides four parallel 10Gbps lanes aggregated into a single 40Gbps link. It supports OM3 fiber up to 100 meters and OM4 fiber up to 150 meters using MTP/MPO connectors, conforming to the 802. 3ba D3.

2 standard. Each lane can also be broken out into four separate 10G SFP+ connections if needed.

Pre-

Installation Considerations

Check compatibility: Ensure the module is compatible with your switch, router, or server and that the fiber type (OM3/OM4) matches the module specifications. Cabling type: Use MTP/MPO 8- or 12-fiber cables for SR4 modules.

Avoid AP

C (angle-polished) connectors; only PC or UPC flat-polished connectors are supported. Distance planning: Verify the fiber run length does not exceed the module's maximum supported distance (100m for OM3, 150m for OM4) and consider insertion loss and patch panel connections.

Installation Steps

Power and safety: Ensure the device is powered on; QSFP+ modules are hot-swappable, so no shutdown is required. Insert the module: Align the QSFP+ module with the port and gently push until it clicks into place. Use the push/pull tab for secure insertion and removal.

Connect fiber cables: Attach the MTP/MPO fiber connector to the module, ensuring proper orientation and alignment. Avoid bending the fiber sharply to prevent signal loss. Verify link status: Check the device LEDs or management interface to confirm the module is recognized and the link is active.

Optional breakout: If using a breakout cable, connect each of the four 10G channels to the corresponding SFP+ ports on the remote device. Operational TipsHot-swapping: QSFP+ modules can be inserted or removed while the device is powered on without disrupting other ports. Structured cabling: Plan fiber runs with patch panels to allow easy moves, adds, and changes, similar to structured electrical wiring.

Environmental considerations: Keep the module and fiber clean; dust or debris can degrade performance. Use dust caps when the module is not connected.

Summary

Installing a 40G multimode QSFP+ module involves ensuring fiber compatibility, proper insertion, and secure MTP/MPO connections. Hot-swappable design allows installation without downtime, and careful planning of fiber runs ensures reliable 40G connectivity in data center or enterprise networks.
