Comparison of performance between intelligent fiber Bragg gratings and other options

Intelligent AI-designed FBGs enhance predictive accuracy and customization, while conventional FBGs provide reliable strain sensing but with higher noise and limited adaptability.

Conventional FBG Performance

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are widely used for strain, temperature, and structural health monitoring due to their high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and compact form factor. In conventional setups, FBGs are demodulated using commercial interrogators to measure strain or temperature. Experimental comparisons show that FBGs exhibit higher noise levels compared to alternative optical sensing methods; for example, a fiber segment interferometer (FSI) demonstrated a fivefold improvement in noise performance over a standard FBG at 1 kHz bandwidth, and longer gauge lengths further reduce noise.

Conventional FB

Gs are limited by temperature-strain cross-sensitivity and the need for precise calibration and protective packaging to maintain long-term reliability.

Intelligent FBG Design

Recent advances leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to optimize FBG design. Techniques such as polynomial regression, support vector regression, decision tree regression, k-nearest neighbors, and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) are used to predict the reflectance spectrum of Bragg gratings based on simulation databases. Intelligent design allows: Accurate prediction of optical response even with limited training data.

Customizable grating parameters for specific applications, including quantum sensing and tailored laser sources. Reduced reliance on resource-intensive simulations, as AI models can interpolate or extrapolate from smaller datasets. Enhanced robustness against variations in fabrication and environmental conditions.
