How long is a fiber Bragg grating

Fiber Bragg gratings typically have grating periods of hundreds of nanometers to hundreds of micrometers and overall lengths of a few millimeters to several centimeters.

Grating Period

The grating period is the distance between consecutive refractive index variations in the fiber core. For standard FBGs reflecting near 1,500 nm, the period is around 500 nm, depending on the effective refractive index of the fiber core. Long-period fiber gratings, used for broader wavelength responses, have periods ranging from 100 micrometers to 1 millimeter, making them easier to manufacture.

Grating Length

The overall length of a fiber Bragg grating is typically a few millimeters, though it can extend to several centimeters depending on the application. Longer gratings with weak index modulation produce narrow reflection bandwidths, while shorter, stronger gratings or aperiodic designs can achieve broader bandwidths.

Fiber Dimensions

The fiber itself usually has a core diameter of about 8 micrometers and a cladding diameter of 125 micrometers. With protective coatings, the total fiber diameter can be around 250 micrometers. The grating is inscribed within the core, forming a resonant structure that selectively reflects light at the Bragg wavelength.

Variations

Uniform FB

Gs: Consistent grating period along the length, reflecting a single narrow wavelength.

Chirped FB

Gs: Varying grating period along the fiber, reflecting a broader wavelength range, useful for dispersion compensation.

FB

G Arrays: Multiple gratings on the same fiber for multiplexed sensing or wavelength management.

Custom FB

Gs: Tailored grating patterns, periods, and lengths for specialized applications. In summary, FBG size is defined by both the microscopic grating period (hundreds of nanometers to millimeters) and the macroscopic grating length (millimeters to centimeters), with fiber core and cladding dimensions providing the structural context for these gratings.

The structure of the FBG can vary via the refractive index, or the grating period. The grating period can be uniform or graded, and either localised or distributed in a superstructure. The refractive index has two primary characteristics, the refractive index profile, and the offset. Typically, the refractive index profile can be uniform or apodized, and the refractive index offset is positive or zero. There are six common structures for FBGs;
