Optical Module Switch Server

Switch server optical modules are hot-pluggable transceivers that enable servers to connect to network switches via fiber or copper, typically installed through server NICs.

Overview

Switch server optical modules, commonly in the SFP family (SFP, SFP+, SFP28), are compact, hot-pluggable transceivers that convert electrical signals from a server or switch into optical signals for fiber transmission, or vice versa, for copper connections. They are not directly installed on server motherboards; instead, servers use network interface cards (NICs) with SFP ports to host these modules. This modular approach allows flexibility in network deployment, supporting different speeds and media types without replacing the server or switch hardware.

Server Connection

Most servers lack native optical ports. To connect to a switch via fiber, a PCIe NIC is installed in the server, which provides slots for optical modules. For example, Intel X520 series NICs support 10G SFP+ modules, while other NICs may support 1G, 25G, or higher speeds.

The optical module is inserted into the NIC, and a fiber patch cord connects it to the corresponding switch port. Compatibility depends on the NIC manufacturer (Intel, Broadcom, Mellanox, QLogic) and the module type.

Switch Port Compatibility

Switches provide ports compatible with various optical modules: Gigabit SFP, 10G SFP+, 25G SFP28, 40G QSFP, 100G QSFP28, and newer high-speed modules like QSFP112 or OSFP for AI and data center applications. The module must match the switch port speed and type to function correctly. Many modern modules support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM), allowing the host device to monitor temperature, voltage, and optical power.

Key Considerations

Data Rate: Ensure the module supports the desired speed (1G, 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G). Fiber Type: Single-mode (SMF) for long distances, multimode (MMF) for shorter distances. Compatibility: Verify the NIC and switch vendor support the module; MSA compliance ensures interoperability.

Form Factor: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP, QSFP28, QSFP112, OSFP depending on port density and speed requirements.

Summary

Switch server optical modules are essential for high-speed, flexible server-to-switch connections in data centers and enterprise networks. They are installed via server NICs, matched to switch ports, and selected based on speed, fiber type, and vendor compatibility. Proper selection ensures reliable, high-performance network interconnection.
