Construction Requirements for Optical Cable Communication Lines

Optical cable line construction requires adherence to technical, safety, and regulatory standards, including proper cable handling, bend radius, tensile limits, grounding, and clearance requirements.

Technical Requirements

Cable Types and Specifications: Use the correct fiber optic cable type for the application, such as loose tube, ribbon, or premises cables, and ensure compliance with flammability and environmental ratings (LSZH, plenum, or OSP) as specified by the manufacturer and standards. Bend Radius: Do not exceed the minimum bend radius. For loose tube and ribbon cables, maintain 20 times the cable diameter during installation tension and 10 times during static conditions to prevent fiber deformation and attenuation increases.

Pulling Tension: Do not exceed the maximum tensile force specified for the cable, typically around 600 lbf for OSP cables. Use cable breakaway devices and swivels to prevent twisting and over-tensioning. Cable Handling: Avoid sharp bends, turn-backs, and pulling over edges.

Use figure-8 loops when laying cable to prevent twisting. Protect cables from mechanical damage, sharp objects, and extreme temperatures during storage and installation. Storage and Reels: Store reels on flat, firm surfaces, secure them to prevent movement, and seal cable ends to prevent moisture intrusion.

Avoid areas prone to flooding or uneven terrain.

Safety and Regulatory Requirements

Clearances: Maintain minimum clearances from energized conductors and roadways. For aerial installations, a minimum of 18 feet above traveled roads and 40 inches from energized conductors is required. Grounding and Bonding: Follow local and company procedures for bonding and grounding, especially for cables with metallic components.

Eye and Skin Protection: Use appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent injury from fiber scraps and other hazards. Utility Coordination: Locate underground utilities before construction to avoid damage and comply with local regulations.

Installation Best Practices

Pulley and Reel Placement: Position reels and pulleys to minimize cable bending angles. Use cable shoots or pulleys with diameters equal to or greater than the specified bend radius. Intermediate Supports: For vertical rises, use intermediate attachment points to reduce long-term load on the cable.

Environmental Protection: Protect cables from UV exposure, moisture, and mechanical stress during installation.

LSZ

H sheathed cables are more sensitive to cracks and require careful handling. Documentation and Compliance: Follow manufacturer specifications, FOA standards, and local electrical codes (NEC/OSHA) to ensure compliance and long-term reliability. By following these technical, safety, and regulatory requirements, optical cable lines can be installed efficiently while minimizing the risk of damage, signal loss, or safety hazards.
