How to replace fiber optic sensors

Replacing fiber optic sensors involves carefully removing the old sensor, preparing the surface, installing the new sensor with proper adhesives or mounting methods, and ensuring strain relief and protection for accurate measurements. Step 1: Power Down and DisconnectBefore starting, turn off all equipment connected to the fiber optic sensor to prevent electrical hazards or damage. Disconnect the fiber from any amplifiers, controllers, or measurement devices.

Step 2: Remove the Old SensorSurface-mounted sensors: Gently remove adhesives or tapes securing the fiber. Use a solvent compatible with the adhesive if necessary, taking care not to damage the substrate. Embedded sensors: If the fiber is embedded in concrete or other materials, removal may require cutting or carefully extracting the fiber without disturbing surrounding structures.

Step 3: Prepare the SurfaceClean the substrate thoroughly to remove dust, grease, or old adhesive residues. Abrade or condition the surface if recommended, similar to standard strain gauge preparation, to ensure strong bonding for the new sensor. Neutralize the surface if using chemical adhesives to prevent reactions that could weaken the bond.

Step 4: Install the New SensorAdhesive bonding: Apply a suitable adhesive such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10 to attach the fiber to the surface. Ensure the fiber is properly aligned and tensioned. Tape mounting: For temporary or non-critical applications, double-sided tape can be used, though it is less reliable under environmental stress.

Embedment: For concrete or structural applications, embed the fiber during casting or repair, following standard installation practices. Step 5: Ensure Strain Relief and Proper RoutingAvoid sharp bends or kinks in the fiber. Provide strain relief loops to prevent stress on the fiber during thermal expansion or mechanical movement.

Route the fiber away from high-traffic areas or potential mechanical damage. Step 6: Apply Protective LayerAfter the adhesive cures, apply a protective coating such as RTV silicone to shield the fiber from environmental factors like moisture, temperature changes, or mechanical abrasion. Step 7: Reconnect and TestReconnect the fiber to the amplifier or measurement system.

Perform a calibration or verification test to ensure the new sensor provides accurate readings. Compare with previous measurements if possible.

Additional Tips

Handle fibers carefully to avoid microbends or fractures. Follow manufacturer-specific guidelines for adhesives, curing times, and protective coatings. For optical current sensors, ensure proper alignment with the conductor and maintain non-contact operation for safety and accuracy.

By following these steps, you can safely and effectively replace fiber optic sensors while maintaining measurement accuracy and sensor longevity.
