What happens to the bare optical fiber when testing an optical cable

When testing a bare optical fiber, it is temporarily connected to a launch cable or test equipment using a mechanical or fusion splice, allowing measurement of attenuation and continuity without permanent termination. How Bare Fiber is TestedBare optical fiber refers to fiber that has not been terminated with connectors. During testing, it is typically connected to a launch cable that has a connector on the OTDR or light source end, while the bare fiber is attached via a temporary fusion or mechanical splice.

This setup allows technicians to measure the fiber's attenuation, continuity, and overall quality without permanently altering the fiber.

Testing Methods

Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): Sends light pulses through the fiber and measures reflections to detect faults, bends, or splice losses.

The OTD

R trace helps calculate the fiber's loss coefficient by placing markers just after the temporary splice and near the fiber end. Power Meter and Light Source: Measures end-to-end signal loss using a jumper or launch cable. This method is precise for determining attenuation over a known distance.

Visual Fault Locator (VFL): Uses visible light to check continuity and locate breaks or defects. The light may appear as a faint glow at the fault location.

Handling Considerations

Mode Conditioning: For multimode fibers, a mandrel wrap or mode conditioner ensures proper light propagation. Singlemode fibers require only a small loop (~50 mm) to maintain single-mode transmission. Temporary Splices: Fusion splices used for testing do not require splice protectors since they are temporary.

Mechanical splices can also be used for quick connections. Safety: Technicians must avoid looking directly into the fiber end, as laser light can cause eye damage.

Purpose of Testing Bare Fiber

Testing bare fiber ensures that the fiber or cable meets specifications, is free from defects, and has not been damaged during manufacturing or shipping. It allows manufacturers and installers to verify attenuation, continuity, and mechanical integrity before permanent installation. In summary, bare optical fiber is temporarily connected to test equipment using splices or launch cables, allowing accurate measurement of signal loss and continuity while minimizing handling risks and avoiding permanent termination.
