Fiber Optic Coupler Technology

A fiber optic coupler is an optical device that distributes or combines light signals between two or more optical fibers, enabling signal sharing, monitoring, or multiplexing.

Overview

A fiber optic coupler connects multiple fiber ends, allowing light from an input fiber to be split into two or more outputs or combining multiple inputs into a single output, facilitating the transmission of light through multiple paths. Couplers can be passive, requiring no external power, or active, which use detectors, optical-to-electrical converters, and light sources to manage signals.

Types of Fiber Optic Couplers

Splitters and Combiners: Split a single input into multiple outputs or combine multiple inputs into one output. Y-couplers: Provide equal power distribution between outputs. T-couplers: Provide uneven power distribution.

Directional Couplers: Transfer light from an input port to output ports with minimal reflection. X-couplers, Tree, and Star Couplers: Used in complex network topologies for distributing signals. Fabrication Methods: Include fused fiber couplers (thermally tapering and fusing fibers), planar lightwave circuits (PLC), side-polished fibers, and bulk optics like microlenses and beam splitters.

Working Principle

Fiber optic couplers operate through optical power transfer between closely aligned fibers or planar waveguides. The coupling ratio (e.g., 50/50, 70/30, 90/10) determines how power is divided or combined. Physical mechanisms include evanescent field coupling and mode interference.

Directional couplers are designed to minimize back-reflection, ensuring high return loss.
