Fiber Optic Cable Topology Diagram

Fiber optic cable line topologies illustrate how optical fibers connect central offices, distribution points, and end users, commonly using point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, star, or ring configurations. Common Fiber Optic TopologiesPoint-to-Point (P2P): Connects two endpoints directly, ideal for long-distance, high-bandwidth links. Each fiber runs from the source to a single destination, ensuring minimal signal loss and simple management.

Point-to-

Multipoint (P2MP): Uses optical splitters to distribute a single fiber signal to multiple users, commonly in FTTH networks. A single feeder fiber from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is split into multiple fibers serving individual homes or offices. Star Topology: All nodes connect to a central hub or OLT.

This allows easy management and isolation of faults, as each branch operates independently. Ring Topology: Nodes are connected in a closed loop, with data flowing in one or both directions. It provides redundancy, as a break in one segment can be bypassed by the opposite path.

Key Components in FTTH Topology

Optical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the central office, converts electrical signals to optical signals and manages traffic for multiple subscribers. Fiber Distribution Cabinet (FDC): Passive element bridging feeder fibers from the OLT to local distribution fibers. Contains optical splitters to divide signals to multiple homes.

Drop Fiber: Connects the distribution point to individual subscriber premises, often single-mode fiber for long distances. Media Converters: Convert optical signals back to electrical signals for devices inside homes or buildings.

Diagram Representation

A typical FTTH diagram shows: Central Office / OLT as the main hub. Feeder fibers running to Fiber Distribution Cabinets. Optical splitters inside FDCs dividing signals to multiple subscribers.

Drop fibers connecting each home or building. End-user equipment converting optical signals to usable data. Single-mode fiber is used for long-distance feeder lines, while multimode fiber is often used within buildings for shorter distances and high bandwidth.

Diagrams can be simplified for clarity or detailed to show individual fibers and split ratios, depending on the audience. This structure ensures efficient, scalable, and fault-tolerant fiber optic networks suitable for residential, commercial, and metropolitan deployments.
