Ten materials needed to make fiber optic patch cords

Fiber optic patch cords are made from a combination of optical fibers, protective coatings, connectors, ferrules, strength members, and outer jackets, each selected for durability, signal integrity, and environmental suitability.

Core and Coating

The fiber core is typically made of high-purity silica glass with a high refractive index, which allows efficient light transmission with minimal signal loss. Surrounding the core is a cladding layer with a lower refractive index that reflects light back into the core, maintaining signal integrity. The core and cladding are further protected by a primary coating, usually made of UV-cured acrylate or similar polymer, which cushions the fiber and prevents microbending or breakage during handling and installation.

Strength Members

To enhance mechanical strength and prevent fiber breakage, aramid yarn (Kevlar) is commonly used as a strength member. This material absorbs tensile stress and protects the fiber from stretching or pulling forces. In armored patch cords, a stainless steel tube may be added inside the jacket for additional protection against crushing, rodents, or harsh environments.

Connectors and Ferrules

The connectors at each end of the patch cord are made from plastic or metal housings, while the ferrules—which precisely align the fiber core—are typically made of ceramic (zirconia), stainless steel, or polymer. The ferrule ensures low insertion loss and accurate light transmission by maintaining precise alignment of the fiber within the connector.

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket protects the internal components from environmental damage. Common materials include: PVC (OFNR) for general indoor useLSZH (Low-Smoke Zero Halogen) for fire-sensitive areasOFNP (Plenum-rated) for air-handling spaces These jackets are selected based on installation environment, fire safety requirements, and flexibility needs.

Summary

In essence, a fiber optic patch cord combines: Silica glass core and cladding for optical transmissionPolymer coatings for protectionAramid yarn or steel armor for mechanical strengthCeramic or metal ferrules for precise alignmentPlastic or metal connector housingsPVC, LSZH, or plenum-rated jackets for environmental protection These materials work together to ensure durable, high-performance, and reliable optical connections in telecommunications, data centers, and FTTH applications.
