UV-resistant cable tray supports

UV-resistant cable trays are available in materials like fiberglass (FRP), UV-stabilized PVC, aluminum, and stainless steel, with styles including ladder, solid-bottom, trough, and wire mesh for outdoor and harsh environments.

Materials for UV Resistance

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP): Highly UV-stable, corrosion-resistant, non-conductive, and suitable for coastal, industrial, or chemical environments.

FR

P trays are lightweight, maintenance-free, and fire-retardant, making them ideal for long-term outdoor use. UV-Stabilized PVC: Offers moderate UV resistance and is cost-effective for smaller installations. Must be explicitly labeled UV-stabilized to prevent brittleness and cracking under prolonged sun exposure.

Aluminum: Lightweight, excellent for rooftop installations, and resistant to UV degradation. Care must be taken to avoid galvanic corrosion when in contact with dissimilar metals.

Hot-

Dip Galvanized (HDG) Steel: Provides strong UV protection and mechanical strength, suitable for large ground-mounted solar farms or industrial outdoor projects. Stainless Steel 316: Superior UV and corrosion resistance, recommended for coastal or high-salt environments. Tray StylesLadder-Type: Open design with rungs, excellent ventilation, easy cable access, and high strength-to-weight ratio.

Ideal for power cables and long spans.

Solid-

Bottom: Provides protection for sensitive cables like fiber optics, prevents debris entry, and offers EMI/RFI shielding. Requires weep holes outdoors to prevent water accumulation. Trough: A compromise between ladder and solid, suitable for small-diameter power or control cables, offering moderate ventilation and support.

Wire Mesh: Flexible, lightweight, and easy to reconfigure. Best for IT/data centers or light-duty outdoor applications where frequent modifications are needed. Channel: Narrow, ventilated or solid-bottom trays for small instrumentation cables or cable drops from main runs.

Installation Considerations

Ensure proper span and support based on cable load and environmental conditions. Use UV-rated clips, brackets, and fasteners to prevent degradation over time. Avoid mixing metals to prevent galvanic corrosion; use plastic or rubber spacers between dissimilar metals.

Consider ventilation to prevent overheating, especially under direct sunlight, using perforated or wire mesh designs. Comply with standards such as NEMA VE-1/2, NEC Article 392, and IEEE 635 for outdoor cable tray installations.

Summary

For long-lasting outdoor cable management, FRP and UV-stabilized PVC are excellent for corrosion and UV resistance, while aluminum and HDG steel provide mechanical strength and durability. Ladder, solid-bottom, trough, and wire mesh styles offer flexibility depending on cable type, load, and environmental exposure. Proper selection of material, style, and accessories ensures safe, efficient, and maintenance-free cable routing in UV-intensive environments.
