Cable tray modified with a file

Cable trays can be modified by editing their properties, creating custom families, or adjusting catalog files depending on the software used.

Modifying Cable Trays in Revit

In Revit, you can modify cable trays directly using the Modify | Cable Trays tab, where you can drag segments to new endpoints, extend them, or connect them to other trays. The Options Bar allows you to adjust tray-specific parameters such as width, height, and type. For more advanced customization, creating custom line-based cable tray families or using Fabrication Parts with the Sample Fabrication library can provide greater flexibility for straight runs and fittings.

Using Dynamo for Automation

For automated or scripted modifications, Dynamo can be used to draw cable trays along lines created in Revit. The CableTray.

By

Line node allows you to generate straight stretches and curves according to vertex angles, with dimensions and tray types pre-defined. This approach is useful for repetitive layouts or complex routing. Modifying Cable Tray Catalogs in AutoCAD MEPIn AutoCAD MEP, cable trays are managed through catalog files.

To modify a tray: Locate the catalog folder via Options > MEP Catalogs > Cable Tray. Duplicate the folder to preserve the original. Open the duplicated catalog in the Catalog Editor from the Manage tab.

Edit parts, dimensions, or attributes as needed while in the Electrical workspace.

Modifying Material Attributes

Some software, like AVEVA E3D, allows modification of cableway branch materials. You can adjust attributes such as tray length, gaps between components, and dressing options. Changes are applied by editing the attributes in the Modify Material window and committing them with Apply Changes.

Key Considerations

System families in Revit cannot be fully modified directly; custom families or Fabrication Parts are recommended for flexibility. Always duplicate catalogs or families before editing to avoid corrupting default content. Use scripting or automation for large-scale or repetitive modifications to save time and maintain consistency.

By combining these approaches, you can effectively modify cable trays to meet project-specific requirements, whether through direct editing, catalog adjustments, or automated scripting.
