Connecting jumpers to the household electrical distribution box

The jumper connection method, which links multiple circuit breakers with a single wire, is unsafe and prohibited by national standards; proper wiring requires each breaker to be individually connected to the main supply or busbar. What is a Jumper Connection? A jumper connection in a distribution box involves connecting the output of one circuit breaker to the input of the next using a short wire, effectively “daisy-chaining” multiple breakers from a single line.

For example, a single phase wire from the main switch may be connected to the first breaker, and then a jumper wire runs from the first breaker to the second, and so on. This method was commonly used in older installations to save wiring but is now explicitly prohibited due to safety hazards.

Hazards of Jumper Connections

Overloading Risk: The wire closest to the main switch carries the sum of currents from all downstream breakers. This can exceed the wire's rated capacity, causing overheating without tripping the breakers. Inadequate Protection: Circuit breakers are rated for individual branch currents.

A jumper can allow a wire to carry more current than the breaker's rating, defeating the protective function. Heat Accumulation: Thick wires needed to handle combined currents can crowd the distribution box, reducing heat dissipation and increasing fire risk. For example, a 4 mm² copper wire can carry up to 25A, and a 6 mm² wire up to 32A.

If a jumper carries the sum of multiple circuits, it can easily exceed these limits without tripping the breaker.

Proper Connection Method

Modern standards require each circuit breaker to be connected individually to the main supply or busbar: Phase Lines: Connect the main phase line to a busbar or directly to each MCB input. Avoid daisy-chaining with jumpers. Neutral Lines: Connect all neutral wires to a neutral link or busbar.

Each branch circuit should have its neutral connected individually. RCCB/MCB Integration: The main switch feeds the RCCB (for leakage protection), and the RCCB output feeds individual MCBs.

Each MC

B then protects its respective load. Wire Sizing: Select wire sizes according to the current rating of each branch, not the sum of multiple circuits.

Summary

Do not use jumper connections in home distribution boxes; they are unsafe and non-compliant. Use individual connections from the main switch or busbar to each breaker. Ensure proper wire sizing and protective devices (MCBs, RCCBs) are installed according to standards.

Following these practices ensures overcurrent protection, heat management, and overall electrical safety in residential installations.
