Revit Specification Section of Cable Tray

Revit MEP allows detailed configuration of cable tray types, sizes, fittings, offsets, and routing preferences to ensure accurate electrical system design.

Cable Tray Types and Sizes

Revit supports various cable tray types such as Ladder, Solid Bottom, Perforated, Wire Mesh, and Basket. Each type can be customized with specific height, width, and material properties. You can define the default sizes or add custom sizes via Manage > MEP Settings > Electrical Settings > Cable Trays > Size, where you can activate, deactivate, or create new sizes and adjust height and width parameters.

Fittings and Routing Preferences

Cable tray fittings, including elbows, tees, crosses, and reducers, are automatically generated when trays change direction or intersect. You can configure these by selecting Cable Tray with Fittings, then using Edit Type to set parameters such as bend radius, vertical inside/outside bends, and cross radius. Ensure the correct fitting families are loaded into the project to enable proper routing.

Annotation and Display Settings

The Cable Tray Settings pane allows you to control how trays and fittings are displayed: Use Annot. Scale for Single Line Fittings: Determines if fittings follow the annotation size. Cable Tray Fitting Annotation Size: Sets the plotted size in single-line views.

Cable Tray Size Separator and Suffix: Defines symbols for displaying tray dimensions (e.g., 12" x 4") and units. Cable Tray Connector Separator: Specifies symbols between connectors. Offset, Elevation, and PlacementWhen placing trays, you can set offsets and elevations in the properties palette to coordinate with other MEP systems.

The Options Bar allows adjustments to default height and width, which are remembered for future placements using Create Similar. Proper elevation and offset settings help avoid clashes with lighting, HVAC, or structural elements.

Project Setup and Best Practices

Start with the correct MEP template to ensure all tray families and fittings are available. Configure project defaults in MEP Settings for automatic behavior, including angle defaults and routing preferences. Load all necessary fitting families before starting design to enable clean, automated routing.

Use schedules and reports to manage tray networks, track sizes, and coordinate with other disciplines. By carefully setting up these parameters, Revit MEP enables efficient design, accurate documentation, and smooth coordination of cable tray systems in building projects.
