Two-point method for testing optical cables

The two-point method, or two-point bend test, is a mechanical testing technique used to evaluate the strength and fatigue characteristics of optical fibers and cables. Overview of the Two-Point MethodThe two-point bend test is widely used in the optical fiber industry to determine the mechanical durability of fibers, including high-strength optical fibers and ribbons. In this method, a loop of fiber is bent through 180° between two grooved faceplates.

The fiber is precisely positioned in the grooves, and the faceplates are gradually brought together using a computer-controlled stepper motor. An acoustic detection system halts the motor when the fiber breaks, allowing the software to calculate the fiber's strength based on the faceplate separation at failure.

Equipment and Setup

The system typically includes: Stepper motor-controlled translation stage and controllerMounting plates and single-grooved faceplates for holding polymer-coated fibers (commonly 250 µm diameter)Acoustic break detector with transducerComputer interface for control and data acquisition, often connected via a standard printer portSoftware for automated control, data logging, and strength calculation This setup allows rapid generation of large datasets for routine strength and fatigue measurements, as well as evaluation of different polymer coatings.

Applications in Optical Cable Testing

While the two-point method primarily measures mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue resistance, it complements other optical testing methods that assess signal integrity and attenuation, such as: Insertion loss testing using a light source and power meter, which measures end-to-end signal loss under realistic network conditions Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing, which identifies faults, bends, and splice losses along the fiber Visual Fault Locators (VFLs) for detecting breaks or tight bends visually By combining mechanical testing (two-point bend) with optical performance tests, technicians can ensure that fibers not only transmit signals efficiently but also withstand physical stresses during installation and operation.

Advantages

Provides quantitative data on fiber strength and fatigueRapid and repeatable, suitable for routine quality controlEvaluates the effect of different coatings on fiber durabilityIntegrates with automated systems for high-throughput testing SummaryThe two-point method is a critical tool in the optical fiber industry for assessing the mechanical reliability of fibers. When used alongside optical performance tests like insertion loss and OTDR measurements, it ensures that fiber optic cables meet both mechanical and optical standards, supporting long-term network performance and reliability.
