Photovoltaic module housing material requirements

Photovoltaic module housings are primarily composed of tempered glass, aluminum alloy frames, encapsulants like EVA or POE, and protective backsheets, each serving structural, protective, and performance-enhancing roles. Key Materials and Their Functions1. Tempered Glass The top layer of a PV module is usually made of low-iron tempered glass, which protects the solar cells from mechanical stress, weather, and debris while allowing maximum light transmission.

It is durable, scratch-resistant, and often coated with anti-reflective layers to enhance light absorption and efficiency. 2. Aluminum Alloy Frame The frame, typically made of aluminum alloy, provides structural support, protects the edges of the glass, and facilitates installation and transportation.

Aluminum is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and improves the overall mechanical durability of the module. 3. Encapsulation Materials Encapsulants, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) or polyolefin elastomers (POE), are transparent layers that bond the solar cells to the glass and backsheet.

They protect the cells from moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental degradation while maintaining electrical insulation. 4. Backsheets The backsheet is the rear protective layer of the module, commonly made from polymer films like PET, KPX, or TPX.

It provides insulation, protects against humidity and UV exposure, enhances light reflection within the module, and contributes to thermal management. 5. Junction Box and Interconnects The junction box is mounted on the back of the module and houses electrical connections.

It must be resistant to heat, corrosion, and weather while ensuring safe current conduction. Interconnects, such as tin-coated copper ribbons, connect individual cells and maintain electrical performance.

Additional Considerations

Durability and Weather Resistance: The combination of glass, frame, encapsulant, and backsheet ensures the module can withstand wind, snow, and temperature fluctuations. Efficiency: High-quality materials improve light absorption and reduce energy loss. Sustainability: Many materials are recyclable, reducing environmental impact over the module's 25–30 year lifespan.

These materials collectively form the housing and protective structure of photovoltaic modules, ensuring long-term performance, safety, and reliability in diverse environmental conditions.
