Distributed optical fiber and grating optical fiber

Distributed optical fibers provide continuous sensing along the fiber length, while grating optical fibers, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), offer localized or quasi-distributed sensing at specific points.

Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors

Distributed optical fiber sensors measure physical parameters continuously along the entire fiber length. They rely on intrinsic scattering mechanisms such as Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering to detect changes in temperature, strain, or vibration with high spatial resolution over distances ranging from meters to tens of kilometers. These sensors are ideal for applications requiring continuous monitoring, such as structural health monitoring of bridges, pipelines, or railway tracks.

Advanced distributed systems can achieve centimeter-scale resolution and are capable of detecting dynamic events like acoustic signals or shape changes in multicore fibers.

Grating Optical Fiber Sensors

Grating optical fibers, particularly Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), are created by periodically modulating the refractive index along the fiber core using UV light and phase masks.

FB

Gs act as wavelength-selective mirrors, reflecting light at a specific Bragg wavelength that shifts in response to strain or temperature changes. Variants include: Uniform FBGs: Constant grating period, used for precise point measurements.

Chirped FB

Gs: Varying grating period along the fiber, improving dispersion compensation and signal quality.

Tilted or Long-

Period FB

Gs (LPFGs): Specialized gratings for filtering or sensing applications.

FB

Gs can be arranged in quasi-distributed arrays, where multiple gratings are inscribed along a single fiber, enabling multi-point sensing without continuous measurement. Grating fibers: Railway monitoring, medical devices, telecommunications filters, and gain-flattening in optical amplifiers. In summary, distributed optical fibers are suited for continuous, large-scale monitoring, while grating optical fibers provide high-precision, localized measurements. Combining both approaches, such as using FBG arrays in distributed systems, allows for flexible sensing solutions across various industrial and scientific applications.
