The grounding busbar of the distribution box is energized

The grounding busbar in a distribution box is normally not energized under standard operating conditions; it only carries current during a fault. Function of the Grounding BusbarA grounding busbar is a conductive metal bar, typically made of copper or aluminum, that serves as the central point for connecting all equipment grounding conductors in an electrical panel or distribution box. Its primary purpose is to provide a low-impedance path to earth, ensuring that any fault current, such as from a short circuit or a hot conductor contacting a metal enclosure, is safely directed to ground.

This helps prevent electric shock, equipment damage, and fire hazards.

Energization Status

Under normal operation, the grounding busbar does not carry current because it is connected to non-current-carrying metal parts and the earth, which are at zero potential relative to the system ground. It only becomes energized when a fault occurs, allowing the fault current to flow through the grounding conductor to the main breaker, which then trips to isolate the circuit. This ensures that the busbar remains a safety path rather than a live conductor.

Relationship with NeutralIn the main service panel, the neutral busbar is bonded to the grounding busbar, establishing a reference to earth potential. In subpanels, however, the neutral and ground busbars are kept separate to prevent parallel current paths that could energize the panel enclosure and create a shock hazard. This separation ensures that the grounding busbar remains a zero-current path except during fault conditions.

Safety Considerations

Even though the grounding busbar is normally not energized, it is still critical to treat it with caution during maintenance or inspection. Fault conditions, improper wiring, or damaged insulation can cause the busbar to carry current unexpectedly. Always follow proper lockout/tagout procedures and use appropriate testing equipment to verify the absence of voltage before touching any busbar.
