10kV Busbar Operation Sequence

10kV busbar switching involves safely isolating, sectionalizing, or transferring circuits using circuit breakers, bus couplers, and earthing switches in accordance with the busbar configuration and interlocking rules.

Busbar Configurations

At 10kV, common busbar arrangements include: Single Bus: All feeders connect to one bus through individual breakers and isolators. Simple and cost-effective but any bus fault interrupts all circuits. Sectionalized single bus adds bus couplers to split the bus for localized maintenance.

Main and Transfer Bus: A main bus is normally energized, with a transfer (auxiliary) bus de-energized. A bus tie breaker allows circuits to be transferred during maintenance without interrupting supply. Double Bus / Bus Coupler: Two parallel busbars connected via a bus coupler cubicle.

This allows one bus to be isolated for maintenance while the other remains energized, enhancing operational flexibility. Ring Bus / Breaker-and-a-Half: Provides high reliability and fault tolerance, often used in critical substations. Switching Operations1.

Isolation and Sectionalizing

Circuit Breakers: Each feeder or transformer is connected via a withdrawable or fixed circuit breaker. Breakers are opened to isolate a circuit before maintenance. Bus Couplers: Used to connect or disconnect adjacent bus sections.

Switching the bus coupler allows transfer of load between busbars without interrupting supply. Earthing Switches: Closed only after the circuit is de-energized to safely discharge capacitive or atmospheric charges. Interlocks prevent closing onto a live bus.

2.

Operational Sequence

Verify isolation: Ensure the circuit breaker is open and the bus section is de-energized. Operate earthing switch: Close the earthing switch to safely ground the bus section. Switch bus coupler or transfer breaker: If transferring load, operate the bus tie breaker according to interlocking rules.

Perform maintenance or sectionalizing: Only after confirming safe isolation. Restore service: Reverse the sequence, opening earthing switches and closing breakers as per operational plan. 3.

Safety Considerations

Interlocking: Mechanical and electrical interlocks prevent unsafe operations, such as closing a bus coupler onto an energized bus. Capacitive Voltage Detection: Confirms the bus is de-energized before maintenance. Hermetically Sealed Enclosures: Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) ensures safe operation in indoor environments and protects against environmental effects.

I

P Protection: Ensures personnel safety and prevents ingress of dust or moisture during operation. Practical NotesDraw-out breakers reduce downtime during maintenance and allow feeder isolation without affecting the bus. Sectionalized bus arrangements improve flexibility, allowing parts of the bus to remain energized while maintenance is performed on other sections.

Clear operating procedures and adherence to interlocks are essential to prevent errors during bus switching operations. By following these procedures and using the appropriate busbar configuration, 10kV busbar switching can be performed safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to the power supply.

Bus Bar Theory of Operation

When a cutout (hole or slot) is placed in the center of the bus bar, the current is split in two equal parts. Each side of the cutout will generate magnetic field gradients that oppose one another inside the cutout.
