Cable tray wrapping method

Cable tray wrapping involves installing a fire-resistant wrap around trays to protect cables from heat and fire, using overlapping layers secured with stainless steel bands.

Purpose of Cable Tray Wrapping

Cable tray wraps are primarily used for fire protection, ensuring that grouped electrical cables maintain functionality during fire exposure. The wrap acts as a passive barrier, insulating cables from heat and preventing fire propagation along the tray. This is especially important in industrial, nuclear, or sensitive environments where cable failure could compromise safety or operations.

Materials UsedFireMaster Cable Tray Wrap: Made with Superwool® fibers and reinforced with glass fiber aluminum foil for durability and heat reflection. Aluminized facing: Reflects radiant heat while underlying layers provide insulation. Stainless steel bands and clips: Used to secure the wrap to the tray, typically 12.

5mm wide and 0. 4mm thick, spaced at 262mm centers between overlaps.

Installation Steps

Prepare the Tray: Ensure the cable tray is free of debris and properly supported. Cut and Position Wrap: Cut the wrap to length, allowing for minimum 75mm (3 in) overlaps between adjacent blankets. Seal Edges: For fully encapsulated wraps, seal cut edges with 100mm (4 in) strips to prevent gaps.

Secure with Bands: Place stainless steel bands over overlaps and at elbows or bends to maintain tight joints. Bands should be tightened enough to hold the wrap securely without compressing the insulation. Check for Gaps: Fill any openings or loose joints with additional pieces of wrap to ensure continuous protection.

Best Practices

Overlap and Tightness: Proper overlap and secure banding are critical for fire performance; gaps reduce effectiveness. Reflective Facing: Use aluminized facing in areas exposed to sunlight or radiant heat to improve durability. Accessibility: Wraps can be removed and reinstalled for cable maintenance, but this is disruptive, so plan for future access.

Inspection: Regularly inspect wraps for damage or loosening, especially after modifications or maintenance.

Applications

Retrofit Projects: Ideal for existing cable trays where factory-applied coatings are impractical. Sensitive Environments: Nuclear, industrial, or HVAC systems where fire protection is critical. Harsh Conditions: Outdoor or high-temperature areas benefit from reflective and durable wraps.

By following these methods, cable tray wraps provide effective fire protection, maintain cable integrity, and comply with safety standards in industrial and commercial installations.
