Method for classifying optical fiber cable layers

An optical fiber cable consists of a core, cladding, coating, strength members, and an outer jacket, each serving a specific role in light transmission and protection.

Core

The core is the innermost layer of the fiber, made of high-purity glass or plastic, and is responsible for carrying light signals over long distances. Its diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers typically have a core around 9 microns, while multimode fibers range from 50 to 62. 5 microns.

The core's refractive index is higher than the surrounding cladding to enable total internal reflection, which keeps light confined within the core for efficient transmission.

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer of glass or plastic with a lower refractive index. The cladding reflects light back into the core, preventing signal loss and allowing the light to travel long distances with minimal attenuation. It also provides a protective boundary that reduces crosstalk between adjacent fibers.

Coating

The coating is a thin layer of polymer, such as acrylate or polyimide, applied over the cladding. Its primary function is to protect the delicate core and cladding from physical damage, moisture, and microbending, without affecting the optical properties of the fiber.

Strength Members

Strength members are materials like aramid yarn (e.g., Kevlar) or fiberglass rods that surround the coated fiber. They provide tensile strength, preventing the fiber from stretching or breaking during installation and handling. In some designs, these members also help absorb mechanical stress and protect the fiber from crushing forces.

Buffer Tubing and Outer Jacket

The buffer tubing or resin layer encases individual fibers or fiber bundles, offering additional protection against environmental factors such as moisture, temperature changes, and mechanical impact. The outer jacket is the final protective layer, typically made of durable plastic, which shields the entire cable assembly from abrasion, chemicals, and external damage. Outdoor cables may include extra layers for UV resistance or water blocking.

Summary

Each layer of an optical fiber cable plays a critical role: the core transmits light, the cladding confines it, the coating protects the fiber, strength members provide mechanical durability, and the outer jacket safeguards the cable from environmental hazards. Together, these layers ensure reliable, high-speed data transmission over long distances.
