PoE switch networking mode

PoE switches operate in different modes to deliver power over Ethernet cables, including Mode A, Mode B, and 4-pair PoE, with automatic negotiation and configurable power allocation per port.

Po

E Modes Overview

Mode A (Alternative A) transmits power on the same pairs used for data in 10/100 Mbps Ethernet (pairs 2 and 3), allowing simultaneous data and power delivery without interference. Mode B (Alternative B) separates power and data by using the spare pairs (pairs 1 and 4) in 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, which can simplify troubleshooting. 4-pair PoE (4PPoE) uses all four twisted pairs in the cable, enabling higher power delivery for devices like pan–tilt–zoom cameras, high-performance access points, or even laptops.

For gigabit Ethernet and faster, both Mode A and Mode B transmit power over all four pairs since all pairs carry data at these speeds.

Po

E Standards and Power LevelsIEEE 802. 3af (PoE): Provides up to 15. 4 W per port, with 12.

95 W guaranteed at the device.

IEE

E 802. 3at (PoE+): Provides up to 30 W per port, with 25. 5 W guaranteed at the device.

IEE

E 802. 3bt (PoE++/UPOE): Supports higher power levels, often up to 60–90 W per port, using 4-pair PoE. Switches typically default to auto mode, detecting connected powered devices (PDs) and supplying the appropriate power automatically.

Administrators can also configure ports manually to never provide power or set a maximum wattage per port to manage the switch's total power budget. Power Management and ConfigurationPoE switches maintain a total power budget, which is the maximum power the switch can distribute across all ports. If the sum of connected devices' power requirements exceeds this budget, some ports may not receive power or may be limited.

Advanced switches use CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) or LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) to negotiate power with devices, ensuring safe delivery and preventing damage to non-PoE devices. Administrators can monitor power usage per port using commands like show power inline on Cisco switches, which displays the allocated and available power for each interface.

Practical Considerations

Ensure the switch's total PoE budget exceeds the sum of all connected devices' requirements. Use Mode A or B depending on cabling and troubleshooting preferences. For high-power devices, consider 4-pair PoE or PoE++ capable switches.

Configure ports manually if certain devices should not receive PoE to prevent overloading the switch. Understanding these modes and standards ensures reliable power delivery and network performance for devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points.

PoE Configuration Guide

In this mode, the PoE-capable switch does not power the PoE port and disables powered-device detection. Use this setting on a port that serves only data and is not PoE-enabled.
