How to tie the binding wire of a telecommunications optical cable

Use cable lacing techniques with appropriate lacing tape or wire to secure optical cables without damaging the fibers.

Materials and Preparation

For optical cables, use thin lacing cord or flat lacing tape made of materials like nylon, polyester, Teflon, or Nomex, which are strong yet gentle on the cable jacket. Avoid using plastic zip ties that can pinch or deform the cable. Ensure the cable is clean, free of twists, and laid out straight, maintaining the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer.

Basic Cable Lacing Technique

Start with a secure knot: Begin by tying a whipping knot or clove hitch around the cable bundle to anchor the lacing cord. Running lockstitches: Wrap the lacing cord around the cable bundle in a series of running lockstitches, spacing the wraps evenly relative to the bundle diameter. This keeps the cables tight and organized without compressing the fibers.

End with a secure knot: Finish the lacing with another whipping or reef knot to prevent the cord from unraveling. Trim excess cord neatly.

Common Lacing Patterns

Box Stitch: Ideal for one or a few cables; forms a cylindrical bundle and is quick to tie. Chicago Stitch: Can bind cables in free space or to a support structure; start by tying around the support, then continue as in free space. Kansas City Stitch: Lays the bundle flat against a support, wrapping both the bundle and the support for stability.

Best Practices for Optical Cables

Avoid twisting or pinching: Twisting the cable can stress fibers and cause signal loss. Maintain bend radius: Always respect the minimum bend radius to prevent fiber damage. Use figure-8 technique for long runs: For cables longer than 40 meters, lay the cable in a figure-8 pattern on the ground to prevent twists.

Monitor tension: Do not exceed the maximum tensile load when pulling or securing the cable. Clean connectors: If working near connectors, ensure they are cleaned before and after installation to prevent contamination. By following these steps, you can secure optical cables safely and neatly, ensuring long-term reliability and minimizing the risk of fiber damage.

Proper lacing not only organizes the cables but also maintains signal integrity and facilitates future maintenance.
