How to install a power cable tray elbow

Installing a power cable tray elbow requires proper alignment, support, and secure fastening to maintain electrical safety and system integrity.

Step-by-

Step Installation1. Plan and Prepare the Route Before installing the elbow, ensure the cable tray route is clearly marked and planned, considering clearance, load capacity, and cable separation requirements. Identify where the elbow will change direction and verify that the bend radius is suitable for the cables to prevent damage or excessive stress.

2. Select the Correct Elbow Type Choose an elbow that matches the tray type (ladder, ventilated, or solid-bottom) and the required angle (typically 90° or 45°). Ensure the elbow material is compatible with the tray and environmental conditions, such as aluminum for corrosion resistance.

3. Install Supports Support the elbow according to NEMA VE 2 guidelines. Place supports within 24 inches on both sides of the elbow to prevent sagging and maintain structural integrity.

Use strut supports, shelf brackets, or other approved mounting hardware. Ensure the support system allows for longitudinal movement if expansion joints are present. 4.

Align and Connect the Elbow Position the elbow flush with the adjoining tray sections. Use splice plates or transition brackets to connect the elbow to the straight tray sections. Drill clearance holes if necessary and secure with bolts, nuts, or self-tapping screws, ensuring full contact between the splice plate and tray.

5. Fasten Securely Torque bolts to the manufacturer's recommended specifications (e.g., 3/8” fasteners to 19 ft-lbs for aluminum trays). Ensure all hardware is tightened evenly to prevent misalignment and maintain electrical continuity.

6. Grounding and Bonding Install bonding jumpers at the elbow if it is part of a long run or near expansion joints. Ground the tray system at intervals of 15 meters (50 ft) and at both ends to maintain electrical safety.

Use grounding bushings or compression lugs to bond conduit drop-outs to the tray. 7. Verify Clearance and Cable Entry Ensure there is at least 12 inches of free space above and to the side of the tray for accessibility.

Check that the elbow allows smooth cable entry without exceeding the minimum bend radius, preventing cable damage during installation. 8. Final Inspection Confirm that the elbow is level, properly supported, securely fastened, and bonded.

Verify that cables can be pulled through without obstruction and that the installation complies with NEC Article 392 and NEMA VE 2 standards. By following these steps, a power cable tray elbow can be installed safely, maintaining both mechanical stability and electrical compliance.
