How to fit the white tube for fiber optic cable splicing

The white tube, or splice protector, is slid over the fused fiber joint and heat-shrunk to provide mechanical protection and strain relief.

Step-by-

Step Guide1. Prepare the Fiber: After fusion splicing, ensure the fiber ends are clean, properly cleaved, and fused with minimal loss. Avoid touching the glass surface to prevent contamination or weak splices.

2. Slide the White Tube (Splice Protector): Take the white protective tube and carefully slide it over the fused fiber joint. Make sure it fully covers the splice and extends slightly onto the bare fiber on both sides.

3. Place in Heat Oven: Insert the splice with the white tube into a fusion splice heat oven. The oven will shrink the tube around the fiber, providing a strong, flexible, and strain-relieved protection.

Wait for the completion tone or indicator from the oven. 4. Secure the Splice: Once the heat-shrink process is complete, remove the splice from the oven and place it in a splice tray or closure.

Use clips or holders to prevent movement and protect the fiber from bending or tension. 5. Verify Protection: Check that the white tube is snug, fully covering the splice, and that the fiber is not under stress.

Proper installation ensures long-term durability and minimal signal loss.

Tips and Best Practices

Always use manufacturer-recommended splice protectors to avoid higher failure rates. Maintain a minimum bending radius of 30 mm during handling to prevent fiber breakage. Avoid forcing the fiber into the tube; let it rest naturally to prevent microbends.

Dispose of fiber scraps safely to prevent injury. By following these steps, the white tube will provide mechanical protection, strain relief, and long-term reliability for your fiber optic splice.
