Fiber Tail End Facer

A Fiber Tail End Facer is a precision tool used to cleave, polish, or prepare the end face of optical tail fibers for splicing, connectorization, or inspection.

Purpose and Function

A fiber tail end facer is designed to create a smooth, flat, and properly angled end face on optical fibers, particularly tail fibers that connect optical distribution frames (ODFs) to equipment or other fibers. Proper end face preparation is critical to minimize insertion loss, back reflections, and optical damage, especially in high-power or sensitive fiber optic systems. The tool typically performs the following functions: Cleave the fiber to a precise length and angle, ensuring a clean break free of chips or hackle.

Polish or finish the end face to achieve a smooth surface suitable for splicing or connectorization. Control the protrusion and orientation of the fiber relative to connectors or end caps, which is important for polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers or high-power applications.

Applications

Fiber tail end facers are used in conjunction with: Tail fibers such as FC-SC, FC-FC, SC-SC, and SC-LC types, which connect ODF boxes, equipment ports, or optical boards. Fiber end caps, which are coreless extensions fused or spliced onto the fiber to reduce power density at the air-glass interface and protect the fiber from damage or environmental ingress. High-power fiber lasers or amplifiers, where precise end face preparation prevents damage from high-intensity light.

Photonic crystal fibers (PCF) or hollow-core fibers, where end face quality is critical for maintaining optical performance and high-power handling.

Related Tools

Fiber cleave analyzers and visual inspection systems are often used alongside end facers to verify the quality of the fiber end face. Scanning white-light interferometers (SWLI) can measure the flatness, angle, and surface defects of the prepared fiber end face for quality control. End cap splicers like the Vytran CO₂ splicer are used to attach end caps to fibers after the end face has been properly prepared.

Summary

A Fiber Tail End Facer is essential in fiber optic assembly and maintenance, ensuring that tail fibers and their end caps are properly cleaved, polished, and aligned. This preparation reduces optical losses, prevents damage in high-power applications, and ensures reliable connections in telecommunications, data centers, and laser systems.
