How to straighten fusion splice pigtails

To straighten fusion splice pigtails, handle the fibers gently, maintain a proper bend radius, and use splice protection sleeves to secure and align the fiber.

Step-by-

Step Guidance1. Prepare the Fiber Properly Before splicing, strip the fiber carefully to expose the bare glass, clean it with 99% isopropyl alcohol, and cleave it at a precise 90-degree angle using a high-precision cleaver. Avoid nicks or scratches, as these can weaken the fiber and make straightening difficult.

2. Use a Splice Protection Sleeve Slide a heat-shrink splice protection sleeve onto the pigtail before splicing. After fusion, move the sleeve over the splice and bake it in the splicer's oven.

This sleeve not only protects the splice but also helps maintain a straight alignment. 3. Maintain Proper Bend Radius While handling the pigtail, ensure the bend radius is greater than 30 mm to prevent microbends or fractures.

Avoid sharp bends or twisting, as the glass is extremely fragile at the splice point. 4. Gently Align and Straighten After splicing, gently lay the pigtail in a straight line along a flat surface or within the splicer's fiber tray.

Use the V-grooves in the splicer or a fiber management tray to guide the fiber without applying tension. Do not pull or force the fiber straight; let it naturally relax into position. 5.

Secure the Pigtail Once straightened, secure the pigtail in the tray or enclosure using clips or holders designed for fiber management. This prevents movement that could bend or stress the splice over time. 6.

Final Inspection Check the fiber visually for any kinks or bends. If necessary, slightly adjust the fiber within the tray to ensure a smooth, straight path from the splice to the connector or patch panel. By following these steps, you can straighten fusion splice pigtails safely, maintain low-loss connections, and protect the integrity of your fiber optic network.
