Optical power meter tests output or reception

An optical power meter can measure both the output of a transmitter and the reception at a receiver, depending on how it is connected in the fiber optic system.

Measuring Transmitter Output

To measure the power emitted by a fiber optic transmitter, a test cable is connected from the transmitter to the optical power meter. The meter then reads the absolute optical power in units such as dBm, reflecting the light strength leaving the source. This allows technicians to verify that the transmitter is operating within expected power levels and ensures proper signal launch into the fiber network.

Measuring Receiver Input

For testing the reception at a receiver, the optical power meter is connected to the fiber end that normally feeds the receiver. By disconnecting the fiber from the receiver and attaching it to the meter, the technician can measure the received optical power, which indicates how much light actually reaches the receiver after traveling through the fiber, connectors, and splices. This helps identify losses or degradation in the link.

How the Meter Works

An optical power meter uses a photodiode sensor to convert incoming light into an electrical signal, which is then amplified and displayed digitally. The meter must be set to the correct wavelength to match the signal being tested, as sensitivity varies with wavelength. Proper connector cleaning and calibration are essential for accurate readings.

Practical Considerations

Units: Power is measured in dBm (absolute) or dB (relative loss). Calibration: Regular calibration ensures measurements are traceable and reliable. Adapters: Modular connectors allow testing with different fiber types.

Loss Measurement: When combined with a light source, the meter can also measure end-to-end optical loss as part of an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS),. In summary, an optical power meter is versatile and can test both the output of transmitters and the input at receivers, providing critical information for maintaining and troubleshooting fiber optic networks.
