Actual connection of fiber optic cable and cold connector

A cold connector, also known as a mechanical splice or fast connector, allows a fiber optic cable to be terminated and connected without fusion splicing, using mechanical alignment and index-matching gel. What is a Cold Connector? A cold connector is a field-installable fiber optic connector that terminates a fiber cable without requiring heat or a fusion splicer.

It aligns the bare fiber with a short fiber stub inside the connector body using mechanical clamping or pre-installed index-matching gel, enabling optical signal transmission. This method is widely used in FTTH deployments, emergency repairs, and small-scale installations because it is fast, cost-effective, and does not require specialized equipment. Advantages of Using a Cold ConnectorQuick Installation: Termination can be completed in seconds to minutes, making it ideal for field operations.

No Power Required: Unlike fusion splicing, cold connectors do not need electricity, which is useful in remote locations.

Cost-

Effective: Requires minimal tools and training, reducing installation and maintenance costs. Flexibility: Can be used for temporary or emergency connections and allows easy reconfiguration of network connections.

Performance Considerations

Insertion Loss: Typically ranges from 0. 2 to 0. 5 dB, which is higher than fusion splicing but acceptable for short-term or small-scale applications.

Return Loss: SC/APC cold connectors provide return loss ≥60 dB, while SC/UPC connectors offer ≥50 dB, suitable for GPON, EPON, and CATV networks. Stability: Mechanical connections may degrade over time, so they are generally recommended for temporary or emergency use rather than permanent installations.

Installation Process

Prepare the Fiber: Strip the outer jacket and clean the bare fiber. Insert into Connector: Place the fiber into the cold connector, aligning it with the internal fiber stub. Secure the Fiber: Lock the fiber using the mechanical clamp or adhesive gel inside the connector.

Test the Connection: Verify optical signal transmission and check insertion loss using an OTDR or power meter.

Applications

Cold connectors are commonly used for: FTTH drop cable terminationsPatch connections in distribution boxesQuick restoration or emergency repairsTemporary network setups where fusion splicing is impractical In summary, connecting a fiber optic cable directly to a cold connector provides a fast, flexible, and cost-effective solution for field installations, though it may have slightly higher loss and lower long-term stability compared to fusion splicing. Proper installation and testing are essential to ensure reliable performance.
