Outdoor High Voltage Busbar

Outdoor high-voltage busbars are typically located in switchyards or substations, supported on insulated pillars or column insulators, and arranged to connect incoming and outgoing feeders efficiently.

Typical Location and Layout

Outdoor high-voltage busbars are installed in electrical switchyards or substations, where they serve as the main junction for collecting power from incoming feeders and distributing it to outgoing feeders. They are generally uninsulated and supported in air by ceramic column insulators or other types of insulated pillars, which maintain electrical isolation from the ground and supporting structures. The busbars are positioned to allow easy access for maintenance and to ensure safe clearance distances between phases and from the ground.

Busbar Types and Support

Tubular busbars: These are hollow or solid metal tubes, usually made of copper or aluminum, and are supported at intervals by column insulators. Tubular busbars are preferred for high-current applications (above 3000 A) due to their mechanical strength and cost-effectiveness. Stranded-wire busbars: These consist of multiple wires clamped together and are secured using dead-end clamps.

They are often used in medium-voltage outdoor installations.

Layout Considerations

The arrangement of outdoor busbars depends on space availability, operational reliability, and ease of supervision. Common layouts include: Single busbar: Simple and economical, used for smaller substations. Double busbar or main-and-transfer bus: Provides redundancy and allows maintenance without interrupting service.

Step-down bays: Busbars in high-voltage stations are often arranged in bays, with tubular busbars supported at alternate or every bay depending on voltage levels. The span length for guyed wire busbars is typically around 50 meters, and the number of portal structures is determined by the overall length of the installation. Overhead lines from transformers are connected to these busbars, often incorporating line traps and capacitors for power-line carrier telephony.

Key Functions

Outdoor high-voltage busbars: Distribute power from transformers to outgoing feeders. Interconnect high-voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, capacitors, and transformers. Minimize power losses due to their large cross-sectional area.

Enhance system reliability by providing a stable conductive path. In summary, outdoor high-voltage busbars are strategically located in switchyards or substations, supported on insulated structures, and arranged to optimize power distribution, safety, and maintenance access. Their design and placement are critical for efficient and reliable operation of high-voltage power systems.
