Viewing Server Optical Module Information

You can view optical module information on a server using Linux commands like ethtool or vendor-specific CLI commands to check status, diagnostics, and module details.

Using Linux Commands

On Linux servers, optical modules (SFP/QSFP) installed on network cards can be queried using the ethtool command: Check interface status: BashCopyethtool Replace with your network interface name (e.g., eth0 or p4p1). This shows link status, speed, duplex, and auto-negotiation settings. View module details: BashCopyethtool -m This command displays transceiver information such as identifier, connector type, transceiver type, nominal bit rate, wavelength, vendor name, part number, and revision.

Check digital diagnostics: If the module supports Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), ethtool -m also provides real-time readings of Tx power, Rx power, temperature, voltage, and alarm thresholds.

Vendor-

Specific Commands

For servers connected to switches or using vendor-specific modules, you may need CLI commands: Huawei switches: BashCopydisplay transceiver [interface interface-type interface-number | slot slot-id] display transceiver diagnosis interface [interface-type interface-number] These commands show module type, optical power, wavelength, transmission distance, temperature, voltage, and current. Cisco switches: BashCopyshow fiber-ports-optical-transceiver This command provides the status of SFP transceivers, including supported speeds, fiber type, and operational status.

Best Practices

Ensure the module is properly seated and the link is active (Link detected: yes) before querying information. Use vendor-certified modules to avoid compatibility issues, data bus errors, or hardware damage. For troubleshooting, check both hardware statistics and digital diagnostics to identify low/high optical power, temperature anomalies, or voltage issues.

By combining ethtool on Linux with vendor-specific CLI commands, you can comprehensively monitor and manage optical modules on your server and connected network devices.
