OTDR test for optical fiber splicing

Performing an OTDR test before splicing ensures fiber integrity, identifies faults, and helps achieve low-loss, high-quality splices.

Purpose of Pre-

Splice OTDR Testing

An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) sends light pulses through the fiber and measures reflections to detect faults, bends, or attenuation points along the cable. Testing before splicing allows technicians to: Verify the fiber is free from defects or excessive loss that could compromise the splice. Identify hidden issues such as microbends, cracks, or contamination that are not visible to the eye.

Document baseline fiber performance for comparison after splicing, ensuring quality control and compliance with standards.

Equipment and Setup

Before testing, ensure you have: An OTDR suitable for the fiber type (singlemode: 1310/1550 nm; multimode: 850/1300 nm). Launch and receive reference cables of the same fiber type to eliminate the OTDR dead zone and measure connector loss accurately. Mating adapters compatible with the fiber connectors.

Cleaning supplies to ensure all connectors and adapters are free of dust or debris. Procedure: Power on the OTDR and allow it to warm up. Clean all connectors and adapters thoroughly.

Connect the launch cable to the OTDR and attach the fiber under test to the launch cable. If using a receive cable, connect it to the far end.

Configure OTD

R parameters: select wavelength, pulse width, and averaging time based on fiber length and expected events. Shorter pulse widths improve spatial resolution for detecting closely spaced events, while longer pulses increase dynamic range for longer fibers. Start the acquisition and monitor the trace in real time.

Interpreting Results

Each splice, connector, or bend appears as a distinct feature on the OTDR trace. Check for unexpected reflections or high-loss events that may indicate fiber defects. Compare measured loss with acceptable thresholds; if loss is excessive, the fiber section may need cleaning, re-cleaving, or replacement before splicing.

Documentation

Save OTD

R traces with descriptive filenames. Record fiber length, splice locations, and measured losses for future reference and quality assurance.

Pre-splice OTD

R documentation provides a baseline to verify post-splice performance and helps troubleshoot any future network issues. Performing an OTDR test before splicing is a critical step to ensure reliable, low-loss fiber connections and to prevent costly network downtime caused by hidden fiber defects.
